All Star Kia East’s Winter Vehicle Tips

2

With the holiday season being in full effect, and our weather ever-changing, we need to be aware of how to properly care for our vehicle in the cooler months. Our vehicles may become an afterthought during the hot summer months as road conditions aren’t severe, but during the winter months, regular maintenance needs to be a priority. We have complied a few winter vehicle tips to keep your vehicle in peak condition this winter season.

One sever road hazard during the difficult winter months is poor vehicle lighting. Since the sun sets earlier in the day-which in turn gives us less daylight on our commute home; you need to make sure all of your vehicle’s lights are in excellent shape. If your headlights are yellow, consider replacing them as soon as possible to give you the best illumination during your commute.

Your vehicle’s antifreeze has to be just right! Ideally it should be a 50-50 mix of coolant and water inside of your radiator. Having this perfect ratio will prevent the mixture from freezing at colder temperatures. You can easily check the status of the mixture yourself with a low-cost antifreeze tester.

Following these great tips will help your vehicle stay at its peak! These are just a few tips of many winter vehicle tips. Schedule your service appointment today to have one of our skilled technician get you all set for winter driving.

Back to School for Your Car Too!

Back to School Road Sign with Dramatic Clouds and Sky.

Although it may still feel like summer time outside, back-to-school time is right around the corner. August is always a busy month for parents and kids. Parents are trying to squeeze in last minute vacations and the kids are wanting to play with their friends all day! One item that is not usually on the top of the to-do list when heading back to school is your vehicle maintenance. Whether you’re attending high school, heading back to college or you’re the chauffeur for your family, your vehicle is going to need a little TLC before heading back to school and work!

Stay Organized

The cars of busy college students and parents with children in school often resemble cargo trucks after the start of school. Books, sports equipment, gym shoes, etc. often find a permanent home in vehicles. So stay organized! There are a number of bags and organizers which can help maximize the space in your trunk. Carve out some space just for your safety equipment so you will always be prepared!

Check the Lights

This is a good time to get your kids involved in the preventive maintenance checklist review. Have him or her get in the car and turn on the headlights, turn signals and emergency flashing lights as you walk around the vehicle to make sure they are working. Check the brake lights by having him or her press the brake pedal, too. Vehicles can have many different types of bulbs and they have varying lifespans, according to Firestone. Inspect your vehicle regularly to ensure your lights are working properly.

Be Prepared

Make sure the vehicle has basic safety equipment including jumper cables, a pair of gloves, a flashlight with extra batteries, washer fluid and other items. A pre-packaged auto safety kit is also a great choice. They are compact and provide everything you need. Some other good ideas include granola bars, a sunshade, towels, blankets and bottled water.

Making sure you and your college-bound kid’s vehicles are prepared and running smoothly before the hustle and bustle of school starts back up is very important. Doing routine maintenance on your vehicle will not only ensure your safety on the road, but it will also prolong the life of your vehicle!

National Car Care Month

2016-04-11 National Car Care Month

April is National Care Car Month! “Why April?” you may ask yourself. In April, as winter comes to an end, it is time to get your Kia ready for spring driving and summer road trips! National Car Care Month reminds you to take care of any issues that may have occurred or been ignored during winter. Spring time is filled with sunshine, some afternoon showers and lots of pollen. Make sure your Kia’s tires are rotated, balanced and in good condition for those wet roads. Deep potholes aren’t friendly to shocks and struts. An inspection to determine wear or leaks can alleviate bigger issues down the road. Also having your wheels properly aligned after a season of tough conditions can help keep you on the road in a safe direction. Also make sure your windshield wiper blades are being replaced every 6-12 months to avoid streaking on your windshield.

With all of that pollen in the air, your Kia’s air filter can get clogged up pretty quickly. Make sure you are routinely checking and changing it to ensure optimal air flow is being produced. When it comes to your Kia’s safety, the brake system is at the top of the list. Making sure your brakes are working properly before you head out on those slick roads or long summer road trips will ensure for a safe and comfortable ride! Brakes are a normal wear item for any car and eventually they’re going to need to be replaced. For routine maintenance, check your vehicle’s braking system at least once a year. A thorough inspection should include brake lining wear, brake fluid level, rotor thickness, condition of hoses and brake lines, brake and dash warning lights, as well as taking the car for a test drive to detect other potential brake system problems.
